5 Tips To Become A Better Investor This Year - January 27, 2012 by Card Players Spana

It’s almost February and many of us have already let our new year resolutions fall by the wayside. Luckily, there’s still time to get your investing smarts on track for 2012.

Here are some themes to keep in mind to help you become a better investor this year:

      1. Be News Agnostic — Avoid being swayed by the news of the day, whether it’s good or bad. Focus on trends versus headlines. Expose yourself to thoughtful interpretation of what’s going on by following analysts, journalists and bloggers you trust.
      2. Cash is Not Necessarily King — You may sleep better at night if you are invested in cash and thus avoiding the ups and downs of the market. However,  cash has a price since it isn’t returning enough to cover even our current low inflation rate—so you are actually losing money when you are overly invested in cash.
      3. Prudence is Queen — A diversified portfolio, modified for current economic, political and global circumstances, is the best approach. Make sure you are not over-invested in your company’s stock and that you have a good mix of various types of investments, including cash.
      4. Time for Generosity — If your assets exceed million as an individual or million as a couple, you can reduce estate taxes in the future by making some strategic gifts to heirs now.  The million per person estate/gift tax exemption is going away by the end of 2012.
      5. Give Plans Another Go-Around — Many experts are projecting lower returns on investments in the coming years.  So this is a good time to get a financial plan—or refresh your last one—and assess whether you are still on track to meet your retirement goals.

You may need some time to get good at it and start winning, but you are going to have a great time doing it. The first thing you should concern yourself with is learning how the game really works. You have to get to twenty-one without busting and you have to do it before the dealer does. Due to having a strategy, there are going to be consistent moves that are going to help you and your odds. Tips for Blackjack Gamers- Part 2 - July 25, 2011 by Card Players Spana

Once you get a handle on the basic layout of blackjack and the basic strategy chart, then you can move on to practicing. The good news is that if you want to practice you are going to find plenty of places to do it online. One of the best places to go is to the online tutorials available. These of course are free and they can offer you the best training ground to work with. They are going to analyze your gambling and the moves you make in different situations and then tell you what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. For example, let’s say you keep making the mistake of hitting on a seventeen. The tutorial is going to tell you this and give you the right moves to make. It is a great way to get you a second-hand look at what your bad habits are and then change them. This is the best way for you to work out your strategy. Getting a review of your consistent moves is going to get you an inside look at your game and come up with a better strategy to win.

Once you learn the basics and get some reviews on your progress, you can then ease your way into the games. If you are newer, then you should ease your way into the games with smaller-wager ones. You don’t want to jump right into the big-money due to lack of skills. You are going to find yourself quickly eliminated and out of the money you invested in the game. The best idea is to set your bankroll and then participate in the games that require only 5-7% of the bankroll limit as their buy-in. For example, if your bankroll is 0, you want to stick to games with a buy-in of to . This is a great rule of thumb to stickto when you are wagering at any game, but it is particularly helpful with blackjack. Never mirror the other gamers at the table, or the dealer– just go with what you have learned about the game thus far. This is going to help you to make the best moves over time and truly build your own gaming skill at the blackjack tables.

Blackjack Tips: Number of Decks Used - August 10, 2010 by Card Players Spana

Blackjack is considered to be highly beatable. Couple the nature of blackjack with limited house advantage and you will have one highly profitable casino game to play. That is why most casinos, whether it is an online casino or brick and mortar casino, try to increase their house advantage by adding the number of decks used in a blackjack table. To stay ahead of the game, you need to know the number of decks used and use the appropriate blackjack strategy accordingly.

Playing with four decks or more means you will have a superbly hard time counting cards. That is why sticking to simpler blackjack strategy such as the right blackjack matrix is always better. You will be able to focus more on the game and not trying to figure out the right count.

Before you use the blackjack matrix, make sure it is designed for the right amount of decks used as well as the right set of table rules. Blackjack matrix used to play at tables that use 4 decks is definitely not the same compared to blackjack matrix designed for 8-deck tables.

You can ask for the right information regarding the number of decks used directly to the casino management. If you are playing at your favorite brick and mortar casino, for example, simply – and subtly – ask the pit boss for information. Online blackjack tables are usually described properly, so finding out the number of decks used will not be a problem at all. Pay attention to this small detail in order to stay profitable.

Proposal Submission Tips - April 12, 2010 by Card Players Spana

We’re getting close to the deadline for proposal submissions and thought it might be helpful to provide some tips about how to get your proposal accepted.

These tips aren’t meant to be exclusive to Open Source Bridge. We hope you will be able to apply some of them when you submit to speak elsewhere.

Have your own tips? Add them in the comments.

Read and understand our Call for Proposals

This falls under the general “know your audience” type of advice. Before you submit your talk, you should understand what type of content we’re soliciting.

Because we are trying to promote cross-pollination as well as provide space for in-depth discussions, our Call for Proposals is rather broad. We’re looking for:

      • Useful recipes for software development, systems administration, and working with open source. (Cooking)
      • Understanding how our systems work, in order to improve and extend. (Chemistry)
      • Building open source businesses that thrive. (Business)
      • Exploring how open source extends through technology into our communities. (Culture)
      • Tinkering, experimenting and bending the rules to make hardware and software do what we want. (Hacks)

You can read more about our conference tracks here.

      Look over previously accepted talks

You can get an idea of what we’re looking for by reviewing the proposals we accepted as sessions for previous years (2009 talks and 2010 talks).

Be specific, but also clear and concise

Let us know the question and give an idea of the answer. Make sure to give clear details about the content of your talk.

Write well and use standard English

Use proper spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation. Use the active voice. Proposals without these things are difficult to read. Our content committee has a lot to read through; please don’t make this process more difficult.

      Provide a good title

A title can make or break a talk. It should be concise, yet comprehensible. Clever, but not overly so. Sparking curiousity is good, but make sure people can tell what you’re going to be talking about. If your title accurately reflects both the subject matter and the tone of your talk, your ideal audience will find you.

Explain why you’d give a good talk

You don’t need to be an expert, but if you are, let us know. Don’t assume we’ll know who you are even if you’ve given a bunch of talks all over the world. Also don’t assume that we won’t pick you if you’ve never spoken. Have you given this talk at a user group with overwhelming success? Let us know in your proposal’s Note to organizers field.

      Spread the word

Open Source Bridge allows public viewing and coments on all proposed submissions. Advertise that you’ve submitted a talk (we even have badges for this) so that people can comment and let our selection committee know they want to see your talk.

      Ask questions

Not sure if your talk would be appropriate for OSBridge? Have other burning questions that are keeping you from submitting? The co-chairs and content commitee are available to answer your questions: content@opensourcebridge.org.

      Practice makes perfect

One sure way to test a talk is to give it to a small audience first. These include your local user group, a brown bag session at your company, or even to a group of friends.

Hopefully these tips will help your chances in getting your talk proposal accepted. Don’t forget that the last day to submit proposals is Wednesday, March 16th.

Blackjack Tips: Exit Strategy - March 13, 2010 by Card Players Spana

One of the biggest mistakes most new blackjack players make is to play until they run out of money. Even after winning large amount of money, these players can’t really keep their winnings because they simply lose the winnings again to several bad calls. It is essentially important that you have proper blackjack exit strategy, and we are going to discus some of them in this article.

Before you even start playing blackjack, set a certain target winning. This way, you can easily quit when the target amount has been reached. You should also set a certain amount of loss limit as well so that you can manage your risks appropriately. Adjust these two aspects according to your playing style for them to work effectively.

Another good approach is to set a certain amount of blackjack bankroll to use for a particular session and play until the amount has been fully spent. If you start with 0, for example, simply play until you have wagered 0 and then quit. No matter how much money you won along the way, you can keep them and see just how profitable the session was easily.

There are also other slightly more advanced blackjack bankroll management approaches and exit strategies. Picking the best one is a matter of understanding your playing style and knowing your limits. Believe me when I say that you will be more profitable in the long run with the right exit strategy in place, since you get to keep your winnings while keeping your risks at minimum.
