Announcing the 2012 Call for Proposals - January 27, 2012 by Card Players Spana

Our call for presentation proposals is now open and we will be accepting proposals through March 16, 2012. Speaking at Open Source Bridge is a great opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm. Now is the time to submit a proposal to speak at the conference!

What kind of proposals, you ask? Open Source Bridge strives to be a different kind of open source conference: one that welcomes all open source languages, platforms, and pursuits while embracing responsible and engaged open source citizenship.

      The conference’s tracks are:
Business: How do you build a successful open source business?
Chemistry: What makes this work? Take the technology apart and teach us about its components.
Cooking: How do you write the script, configure the utility, debug the code, make it work? What are your best recipes?
Culture: What makes open source work? What else does the open source ethic lead us to do?
Hacks: How did you pull that off?

For a little additional inspiration, we encourage you to look through previous years’ archives of sessions presented at Open Source Bridge, but don’t let that limit you, either! We know that certain topic areas have been underrepresented in previous years, and we would very much love a diverse and broad set of proposals for this year’s bridge. We would very much love to see more talks about hardware, security, user experience design and just about everything else related to open source. No idea is too out there. We’d love to see it all.

If you speak at Open Source Bridge, we’ll happily waive the fee for your attendance. Not sure if you should register now, or hold off to see if your talk is accepted? If you wait and your talk is not accepted, we’ll give you a special discount code that will get you a ticket at 0 (that’s off the early-bird rate).

So what are you waiting for? We’d love to hear what you have to say. Begin creating your proposal today.

      Attend the conference

      12 Expectations For 2012 - January 25, 2012 by Card Players Spana

A globe (Globus)Following a year of heightened stock market volatility marked by global political uncertainty, here is my current outlook for the economy and markets in 2012, where more volatility and political uncertainty is expected:

      1) Expected continuation of slow, but steady, growth for the U.S. economy, call it an extended “U-shaped” economic recovery.

      2) Consumer sentiment continues to rise but then stagnates as we get closer to the presidential election cycle–leading to a lack of substantial consumer spending necessary to build a sustainable economic recovery in the U.S.

      3) Consumers, as well as state/local governments and businesses, continue to deleverage while refraining from taking on new debt, which furthers constrains spending growth.

      4) Larger companies with strong dividend histories within traditionally defensive sectors (such as utilities, health care and telecommunications) should fare well given the expected slow growth environment. Should economic growth exceed expectations (i.e. GDP annualized growth of > 3.0%), depressed cyclical sectors such as Basic Materials and energy should perform well.

      5) Expectation for consistent, but not staggering, earnings growth by U.S. companies, many of whom possess exceptionally strong balance sheets with overall record cash balances now exceeding billion. Positive earnings surprises, in areas such as autos where there is pent-up consumer demand, could provide sparks for short-term market rallies.

      6) Bond yields, while edging higher, likely to remain at historic lows–at least through the end of the year–perhaps being maintained by intermittent flights to quality spurred by market volatility in addition to the previously telegraphed liquidity intentions of the Federal Reserve.

      7) Growth investors may continue to turn to gold, and perhaps silver, as an alternative to U.S. Treasuries, for “flights to quality/safe haven” trading opportunities during periods of heightened volatility throughout the year.

      8) More noise to come from the European debt markets, potentially leading to a further tightening of the credit markets and concerns over the future of the euro currency.

      9) Demographic trends place continued pricing pressures on certain commodity types (examples include agriculture, energy and industrial metals) despite a lackluster economy and elevated prices that exist for specific commodities–which could be offset to a degree by weakened demand/slower growth in China.

      10) Real growth takes place away from developed markets in well positioned emerging markets such as Brazil and Colombia in Latin America, Turkey and Egypt in the Middle East and Indonesia and China in Asia.

      11) Slight improvements on the jobs front (primarily in a further reduction of initial jobless claims as opposed to a significant reduction in the unemployment rate) and gradual, yet no material, improvements in the real estate market on a national basis.

      12) Despite a non-robust economy, an unclear domestic political picture and lingering European debt risks, the stock market can, and should, still do well in 2012 and growth investors can benefit from a well diversified portfolio built to withstand the many fits and starts that are expected throughout the year.

Given the many moving pieces in the complex, global investment puzzle, I believe that investors would be wise to revisit their asset allocation strategies at the beginning of this year to help ensure that they have the diversification in place to withstand potential periods of heightened volatility as well as the breadth of asset classes and sectors to help deliver risk adjusted growth opportunities.

Editorial: Regulated Online Poker For The U. S. In 2012 A Difficult Bet - January 16, 2012 by Card Players Spana

The opinions in this editorial do not reflect the positions of the ownership or management of Poker News Daily.

Since the announcement came down in December from the U. S. Department of Justice, changing their stance on the usage of the Wire Act of 1961, the online gaming world – and particularly the online poker community – has been abuzz as to a fully regulated and licensed online poker world coming back to the United States in 2012. Unfortunately, that will not likely happen on the federal level during the course of the coming year and, even on the state-by-state level, it still could be a difficult bet.

On the federal level, there has been a great deal of discussion regarding the subject of legalized online poker. A House subcommittee held two hearings on the subject during the fall of 2011 and those hearings were somewhat positive, with everyone in attendance seemingly agreeing that regulation was a necessity. With that said, the only legislation that is currently being proposed – Texas Representative Joe Barton’s “Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection, and Strengthening UIGEA Act of 2011,” or H.R. 2366 – has not been acted upon either by the House subcommittee or even seen movement towards a full vote in the House.

The hearings also brought out some of the issues that online poker regulation will face in its attempt at passage. The Indian tribes, for whom brick and mortar casinos has been a goldmine, aren’t keen on the regulation of the industry because they will not have the financial ability to be a major player, unlike the gaming companies in the United States and their billion-dollar bankrolls. Even the gaming companies of Las Vegas, who would figure to be the frontrunners for any potential licenses, can’t seem to get on the same page regarding the subject (more on that in a bit).

The proposed Barton Bill may also be something that online poker fans wouldn’t want. A close look at the bill’s title states it “strengthens the UIGEA.” Under the Barton Bill, if an online gaming or poker operation wasn’t licensed by the federal government, it would be an “illegal” operation and subject to blocking and/or seizure by the U. S. government (no word on how they would handle players on such sites). Thus, there would be a handful of operations that American customers would be able to play on and, more than likely, they wouldn’t be the recognizable online poker company names in the industry at this time. (Add in the “opt-out” option for individual states and the customer base goes down even further.)

Even if Representative Barton’s bill was to get out of committee, there are still major hurdles that it would face. The Republican dominated House has several stalwarts against online gaming in general in the form of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Spencer Bachus of Alabama, who have been the most vocal in their opposition. Because of their positions, they can block legislation that they disagree with from coming to a floor vote in the House.

If the Barton Bill would somehow work its way out of the House, the Senate would then have to take up the subject. Without corresponding legislation in the Senate, however, it is unlikely that it would even come to the floor in any manner. As such, the Barton Bill would languish in the purgatory of Congressional procedural process.

Alas, it is also a Presidential election year. While we involved in poker do not believe that the online version of the game is a grave threat to America, simply taking a stance on the subject – whether through a Congressional vote or even a stance in an e-mail to a constituent – could sway a potential voter’s opinion of a candidate (the entire House is up for reelection, while one-third of the Senate is looking to get reelected). Thus, it is highly unlikely that the federal government will make any moves towards online poker regulation during the course of 2012.

So what about the potential for state regulation of online poker? For that to actually come into play, the potential licensees for such operations – currently existing gaming companies or poker rooms – would have to get on the same page regarding the subject. In Las Vegas (where the NGC has regulations ready to go for an intrastate operation), the major players have been divided.

While Caesars Entertainment’s Gary Thompson and MGM Resorts CEO James Murren have been actively advocating for online gaming in the United States on the federal level (Murren actually is on record that online gaming regulation “will pass” in 2012), the M Resorts president Anthony Marnell and Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson have been just as vociferous as to their opposition (Adelson, a major Republican contributor, stated he had a “moral opposition” to internet gaming). The gaming companies would also rather see the legislation of the industry on a federal ground, rather than having to compete for fifty different sets of regulations regarding the industry.

In California, the largest state in the United States and one that has dabbled with online poker regulation, Democratic Governor Jerry Brown is “skeptical” that any potential revenues from gaming regulation would be substantial. On the state level, the poker rooms (which figure to have the financial capability of opening up online poker rooms) and the Indian tribes are warring as well, due to the Indian tribes not having the financial ability to compete on the level of the established poker rooms.

Other states, including New Jersey, Iowa and Florida have all flirted with the regulation of the industry, but nothing has come of those flings as of yet.

All of the current hubbub regarding online gaming – and, in particular, online poker – regulation should continue to brew throughout the coming year. Nevada may move forward with its intrastate network (and potentially other states), but it would be an option that its citizens may not partake of, especially when they can just go around the corner from their home and find a game. While the DoJ decision on the Wire Act has opened the door for so much, there will probably be very little done regarding the regulation and licensing of online gaming and poker operations in the United States for the entirety of 2012.

Top Ten 2012 Predictions - December 22, 2011 by Card Players Spana

2011 has certainly been an interesting year – with many economic, financial and political issues unresolved as the year ends. What this bodes for next year is that 2012 will be another tumultuous year – in fact a year very much like this one.

In no particular order, therefore, my top ten predictions for 2012:

10 – The Presidential election is the Republicans to lose. I retain this view even as the Republicans (led by the House) are self-destructing and opening the door for Obama. If the candidate is Romney, Huntsman or someone with similar moderate views that can attract independents AND there is no third-party candidate, then Obama is out. If, on the other hand, the candidate is Gingrich, Paul, Bachmanor some other candidate who can not attract independents AND/OR a third-party candidate emerges, then we will have four more years of Obama. I know that that is a lot of “ifs,” but we are still early in the race. My money is on a Romney presidency starting in 2013.

9 – The Democrats will retain control of the Senate, although with a smaller majority, in part because like in 2008, the Republicans will put up some unelectable candidates (can anyone say Rhode Island?). The Republicans will retain the House of Representatives, which will look pretty much the same as it does now. Sorry Nancy.

8 – The Supreme Court will uphold the legality of Obama’s Health Care plan, but this will make it an even more polarizing issue in the election (since the decision should come in the Spring). If a Republican is elected President, it will be continue as an even more contentious subject in 2013 and beyond, as the legislative branch will take the lead in repealing parts of the plan.

7 – The stock markets will end slightly up for the year, helped by a year-end relief rally after the election. Volatility should be relatively low, as many investors will stay on the sidelines because of all of the political uncertainty. Another “lost” year like this one. It will remain a stock pickers market – driven largely by earnings in the few sectors of the economy that will do well.

6 – The U.S. economy will not go into recession, though following continuing turmoil in Europe, will get dangerously close. Unemployment will dip somewhat then increase again to about 9% at election time because there will be no significant job bills enacted and political gridlock will dampen demand. Housing will remain in the dumps. The positive economic news of the past month is deceiving.

5 – Europe will go into recession (maybe not all countries but as a whole). There will have to be a number of emergency summits once again, as everyone realizes that the actions enacted in 2011 were only band-aid measures and that real problems remain. The divergence between the stronger Northern European countries and weaker Southern European ones will continue.

4 – The Euro will survive 2012 – barely – and I imagine a year from now the outlook for its continuation past 2012 will be very bleak. Back to those summits for a second – hopefully there won’t be 8 or 9 like there were this year!

3 – The Occupy movements will continue sporadically throughout the year as economic conditions stagnate. I don’t think they will pick-up significantly, however, and absent the emergence of any real leadership – to voice a unified concern or theme in a cohesive manner – the November elections might signal their end.

As for the financial services industry:

2 – At least one major brokerage firm will be sold or spun off by its bank-parent (this excludes Morgan Keegan; in this case, if MK is not sold by the end of the first quarter, I predict that Regions Financial itself will be gobbled up by a larger bank). The bank/brokerage marriages have in large part not worked, so 2012 could be the beginning of the end for many of these relationships. Hint – ML.

1 – The wirehouses will continue to lose advisors to the independent, RIA and semi-independent channels. The attractiveness of working for one of the big four is just not what it used to be – both from a reputational point of view as well as an easy of doing business one. Thewirehouses aren’t going disappear though – just continue to become less dominant.

In any case, 2012 should be another fun and interesting year.

Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all – regardless of the macro-world, may 2012 bring you and your family health and prosperity.
