Halfway houses are homes that addicts can live in after they are released from their primary treatment facility. Many clients attend some of the inpatient programs that are essential for them to recover from their dependence on drugs, and halfway house provide a transition from the inpatient setting. This is a tender time for those who have recently stopped using drugs, and the chances for relapse are high. For this reason, it is essential that addicts choose a place to live that will have a positive effect on their decisions, and provide the support that is needed for them to maintain their sobriety.
Addiction
Unfortunately, millions of people are debilitated by drug addictions they have no control over. Many suffering from a dependence on narcotics have their lives destroyed to the point of homelessness or prison. The only hope most people have for recovery is to enter an intensive rehabilitation program. There these people will be able to get the help and guidance they need to take back their lives.
Rehab
It is absolutely essential for people dealing with a drug addiction to seek out help. Taking the first step is admitting the problem and then enrolling in a inpatient program program. There addicts will be able to come to grips with their condition and begin on the path to recovery. They also learn many ways to cope with the resulting withdrawal symptoms they are likely to experience in a medical setting. Research continues to suggest that if a person is serious about getting over a drug dependency they need to enter rehabilitation.
Seeking Immediate Aftercare
Once initial treatment is complete it is important for a recovering addict to seek immediate aftercare. It is common for many who do not take this critical step in their recovery to have a relapse. Unfortunately, it is very common for someone to think they have their addiction under control when in reality relapse is right around the corner. It is for this reason most clinical practitioners who are experienced with drug rehabilitation recommend some form of aftercare treatment program. This option helps individuals, who may still be fragile, continue to make healthy lifestyle choices for themselves.
Halfway Homes
A great way for an individual to continue receiving care after they leave rehabilitation is to enter into a halfway house. These structured environment help to alleviate the pressures of the outside world by removing distractions that might cause a person to use again. They help foster good habits, encourage residents to seek employment and promote forming healthy, new relationships.
The European Poker Tour (EPT) Copenhagen Main Event wrapped up over the weekend with the 22-year old Dane Mickey Petersen taking the crown to the tune of 2,515,000 kroner or 4,595. Petersen bested the 70+ year-old Pierre Neuville during the heads-up portion of the final table. Neuville, nicknamed “Serial EPT Qualifier,” as this was his 23rd straight EPT event for which he qualified online, received 1,600,000 kroner (2,843) and jumped to 4th on the all-time EPT points leaderboard.
Going into heads-up play, the chip counts were pretty close to even. Because of his elimination of 3rd place finisher Bjarke Hansen, Mickey Petersen had the lead, 4.7 million to 4.27 million. According to reports, Neuville was open to discussing a deal at the point, but Petersen would have nothing of it.
From there, it was a long one-on-one match. Neuville quickly took the lead by about a million chips, but it was short lived, as Petersen did not take long to flip the tables once more. The lead continued to switch hands over the next couple hours, with Neuville actually grabbing a more than 2-to-1 edge. Petersen didn’t give up though (obviously), grinding back to even and then taking a 2-to-1 edge himself within a couple hours.
Neuville made one more run, commandeering the lead one more time, but after the dinner break, it was all Petersen. Over the course of just a few hands, all of which Petersen one, the young Dane rocketed to a 7 million to 1.9 million chip lead. That lead grew some more before Neuville made what was essentially a fruitless double-up, only cutting his deficit to 4 million chips. But because he was in for 190,000 every orbit (every two-handed orbit), Neuville had to do something and do it quickly.
Thus, he moved all-in pre-flop with A-4, as all but the tightest of nits would. Against most hands, he’d be in good shape, but against Petersen’s A-5, he was not. The saving grace here was that with kickers that low, a chop was actually fairly likely. The flop of 6-K-J made that chop just one card greater than 5 away, but the 3 on the turn was not one of those cards. Still, Neuville had a lot of outs to split the pot and stay alive and three outs to double-up. To Neuville’s dismay, though, the river was a 5, pairing Petersen’s kicker and giving him the European Poker Tour Copenhagen title.
This was Mickey Petersen’s first win on the live tournament circuit and second EPT cash, to go along with three World Series of Poker cashes, all of which came last year. The win almost tripled his lifetime live earnings, taking him from just over a quarter million dollars to just under 0,000.

The effects of alcohol abuse are not limited to the alcoholic alone. Families of alcoholics are also victim to the disease. Although alcoholics need treatment, the whole family should learn to support a family member that is undergoing rehab. Alcohol counseling can benefit both the alcoholic and the entire family. It is essential in an alcoholic’s recovery. During counseling, an alcoholic must admit to their problem and have a desire to change. This is necessary for the treatment to become successful. An alcohol addiction detoxification center can help with this process.
Initial Counsel
The counseling can also benefit family members so they will know how to help and support their suffering, loved one. Reducing or eliminating the consumption of alcohol can be achieved with counseling and rehabilitation. Some programs insist on complete abstinence and then help alcoholics with withdrawal symptoms.
Settings
Alcohol rehabilitation can be obtained through public or private organizations. It can take place in a group or independent setting with the support of family members and advice from professionals. Other options include community-based treatments that include behavioral therapy, psychotherapy to counter depression, and mentoring to promote alternative activities. Rehab for alcoholics is also available at hospitals on an outpatient basis. Rehab programs are also available at private rehab centers in various locations.
Treatment
Many rehabilitation centers for alcoholics also deal with drug abuse. Those who want more privacy may want to seek treatment in a private facility which also provides more comfort. Many facilitates will implement pharmaceutical medication in their programs to deal with withdrawal symptoms. Aside from this technique, some rehab centers will also integrate therapy sessions. This additional guidance will make the program more successful for a recovering addict.
Advantages
Patients can benefit immensely from going to a rehabilitation center. The first advantage is having professionals running the center and taking care of the patients. An alcoholic will be given the best possible treatment by medical professionals and counselors. Once a patient is rehabilitated, they can start leading a more normal lifestyle and have healthier relationships.
Improvement
Employment will be easier to find and maintain when one is no longer hooked on alcohol. The alcoholic will find it much easier to complete their work with a clear mind. Recovering alcoholics will sleep more soundly, eat better and feel healthier. People who get off alcohol are encouraged to pursue healthy habit.
Encouragement
Family members of the alcoholic are likewise encouraged to seek activities that include the former alcoholic in the family. This not only encourages healthier hobbies, but also creates a closer bond with the rehabilitated drinker. Guidance and therapy should also be continued well after the physical portion of rehab is done. This is a good way to ensure that the patient will be able to resist any temptation to drink later on.
The European Poker Tour’s stop in Copenhagen, Denmark is entering into the homestretch, with a well-respected Belgian at the top of the leaderboard.
72 players came back on Thursday to whittle the field down to the final 24 contenders. Heading the field at the start of the day was Team LockPro Elite member Melanie Weisner, but she faced significant challengers to her perch. The defending champion of this event, Michael Tureniec, was in pursuit as well as Juha Helppi, Kevin Iacofano and Per Linde. With only 48 players taking down cash in this tournament, there were 24 players who would be walking out of the Casino Copenhagen with nothing to show for their efforts.
Weisner got off to a good start for the day, eliminating Andrey Gulyy within moments of the start of action to push her stack to 383K. Another player making moves at the same time was 2011 World Series of Poker Championship Event runner-up Martin Staszko, who started the day with a miniscule stack. After winning a pot against Maksim Semisoshenko, Staszko would begin a charge towards the top of the pack.
It took over four hours for the pack to work its way down to the bubble. After Iacofano was defeated by Magnus Hansen in a hand which Hansen took with quad fives, the players took almost 45 minutes to find the unfortunate “bubble boy.” That player would be Mikita Badziakouski, who fell at the hands of Anthony Hnatow when Hnatow’s pocket Kings held up against Badziakouski’s suited A-7.
By this time, Weisner had built her stack to 595K in chips, but her run at the title would end soon after the players reached the money. She doubled up Steve O’Dwyer to drop under the 500K mark and handed a few more chips to Hansen. O’Dwyer would double again through Weisner, his pocket Aces holding over her A-Q, to drop Weisner into the danger zone. The end would come for Weisner when she picked up A-Q again and put her chips to the center against Stig Christensen, only to see him turn up A-K. Once the board brought no surprises, Weisner had fallen from the chip lead to out in 28th place.
The player who would eventually end up leading Day Three, Belgium’s Pierre Neuville, began his run at the championship once the money was reached. In what would prove to be a game changing moment, Neuville would raise a hand under the gun and Tureniec simply called on the button. After a 3-Q-2 flop, he checked to Tureniec, who pushed out a 21K bet. Neuville check-raised to 100,000 and was called by Tureniec.
The King on the turn opened up the floodgates. Neuville pushed out a 100K bet once again but this time Tureniec pushed his remaining stack to the center. Neuville made the call and turned up K-Q for a turned two pair. Tureniec, for his part, had been sitting on pocket Aces that were run down with the King on the turn. Once the board failed to pair on the river or provide another Ace, Neuville shot to the top of the pack and Tureniec fell to the basement.
When play started Friday afternoon (Copenhagen time), here’s how the Top Ten lined up:
1. Pierre Neuville, 780,000
2. Alexander Manson, 730,000
3. Aage Floenes Ravn, 691,000
4. Alejandro Sanchez Fernandez, 620,500
5. Keld Volquardsen, 523,500
Spencer Hudson, 523,500
7. Bjarke Hansen, 460,000
8. Mickey Petersen, 451,500
9. Martin Staszko, 432,500
10. Steve O’Dwyer, 423,500
While Staszko’s performance was truly noteworthy (he started the day with only 28K in chips), Neuville’s play was also strong. A retired businessman, the 69-year old Neuville, who played poker socially throughout his life, picked up the game seriously in 2006. Since then, the Team PokerStars Pro member has become quite notable for his abilities to use PokerStars satellite tournaments to win his seat into EPT events. He qualified for 23 consecutive EPT events through these satellites (a record) and has earned over million in his tournament poker career.
Action has already begun today to determine the final eight handed table for the EPT Copenhagen, which will take place tomorrow. At stake for those remaining in the event is a first place prize of 2,515,000 Danish Krone, which converts to just under 4,500 U. S.
A new designer drug known as “red dove” has become increasingly popular amongst young people who are looking for a cheap and legal high. Poison control centers across the globe have reported a rapidly growing number of calls regarding the synthetic stimulant. More and more places are banning the drug, however, there is currently no federal law on the books prohibiting its sale.
Production
Don’t be thrown off by the name as these bath salts are not the sort you would use to soak in the tub with. The presumption in the medical community is that bath salts are MDPV, or methylenedioxypyrovalerone, and are being manufactured by illegal street chemists with derivatives of pyrovalerone. However, nobody truly knows what is in bath salts because there is no way to test for these substances in a lab setting.
Where To Find Bath Salts
Retailers are selling the drug as bath salts and labeling them as being “not safe for human consumption”. This is so they can avoid them from being labeled illegal. They can be purchased at mini-marts and smoke shops around the country or online under names like Ivory Wave and Bolivian Bath. While several states have outlawed their sale, ultimately it will have to be a federal law that takes them off the shelves and out of the hands of young people for good.
Legal Status
The government would have to say bath salts are a schedule 1 drug to make them illegal. Schedule 1 means the drug has no medicinal value and has a high likelihood for abuse. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency has recently invoked its “emergency scheduling authority” to speed up this process. The DEA plans to make it so the possession and selling of bath salts illegal in the United States. This action will stay in effect for at least one year, during which the government is expected to call for permanent ban.
Side Effects
The side effects of bath salt use are similar to that of cocaine or ecstasy. Agitation, paranoia, and chest pain are all felt by users. High blood pressure and increased pulse rate is also common. However, currently there is no test to determine if someone has actually ingested bath salts. The only way to determine if someone has taken bath salts is if they tell you. At this point you will need young adult drug program.
As its tenth season drives towards the final few tournaments of its schedule, poker players from around the world are descending on the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles for the World Poker Tour’s L. A. Poker Classic Main Event, one of the most highly prized jewels of the WPT schedule.
The stop at the Commerce has been a part of the WPT schedule since the inception of the tour back in 2002. In the inaugural event, Gus Hansen secured his spot in WPT lore by winning the tournament over such notable names as Andy Bloch, David “The Dragon” Pham and the late Bob Stupak. That victory by Hansen would be his second of the inaugural season and put Hansen on the map as one of the top professionals in the game.
In fact, the list of players who have captured the WPT L. A. Poker Classic crown reflect some of the biggest names in the game. Such players as Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Alan Goehring, Cornell Cimpan, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Ivey have taken home the championship, while David Benyamine, Ted Forrest, Erick Lindgren, J. C. Tran, Chau Giang, Phil Hellmuth, Scott Montgomery, Vivek Rajkumar and Carlos Mortensen have all made a final table. The ,000 buy in tournament is expected to once again have such star power when its final table plays out on Wednesday (February 29).
In action prior to the beginning of the WPT event today, two top professionals have already earned some money. In the 00 No Limit Hold’em preliminary event, Vanessa Selbst defeated Jonathan Duhamel to take home the championship. In winning the event, Selbst pocketed a 0,294 payday (making her efforts in the WPT event a freeroll), while Duhamel (who has been on a tear in 2012) took down 1,115.
With a good run in the WPT L. A. Poker Classic, Selbst can potentially challenge current WPT Player of the Year frontrunner Will Failla for the crown as the season runs down. Failla currently sits at 1650 points in the POY race, with Vitor Coelho (1500) and Bobby Oboodi (1400) just behind him. Selbst currently sits back in a tie for sixth place with 1200 points; if she is able to make the final table of the L. A. Poker Classic and finish fourth or better, Selbst would pass Failla for the POY lead (provided, of course, that Failla doesn’t join her at the final table!).
Several of the players who will be participating in the WPT L. A. Poker Classic are already on the ground in Los Angeles and champing at the bit to get the tournament underway. “Got 11 hours of sleep that I badly needed,” Jason Somerville Tweeted to his followers early this morning. “Excited to play the K WPT event today!”
Hellmuth seems to be ready to go as well after a good day of cash game action. “I won 00 playing Chinese poker,” he Tweeted. “Now resting in my room…LAPC WPT Day One at noon on Friday.”
WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage reports that early registration has players from around the world scheduled to be a part of the festivities. He also expects that the first place prize for the tournament will once again exceed million, something that the tournament has done in each of its previous ten tournaments.
The L. A. Poker Classic will be taped for broadcast as part of the Season X presentation of the WPT on Fox Sports Network, which started its Season X broadcasts last weekend. The announcers for the WPT, longtime hosts Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, will be joined by guest anchor Marianela Pereyra (sitting in for the soon to be new mom Kimberly Lansing) and the Royal Flush Girls for the entirety of the tournament. Additionally, “The Raw Deal” host Tony “Bond_18” Dunst will start off playing the tournament; if he unfortunately busts from the event, he will provide the online streaming coverage of the final table on Wednesday afternoon.
